Design studio Unfold, founded in 202 by Claire Warnier and Dries Verbruggen after they graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven, develops projects that investigate new ways of creating, manufacturing, financing and distributing in a changing context. 3D printing is one of the technologies the studio uses to explore the merging of aspects of the pre-industrial craft economy with high-tech industrial production methods and digital communication networks. Here is a taste of their work.
Artefacts of a New History is a collection of 9 3D printed ceramic items that seem to be historical pieces but only from a closer perspective, their true contemporary technical nature is revealed.
The Stratigraphic Porcelain project was created back in 2012, a series of tableware products specifically designed for a ceramic 3D printer (also up top).
The Skafaldo Desk Lamp and the Skafaldo Bowl and Side Table, are the fruit of a collaboration with Materialise, where support structures are automatically generated by the 3D printing software. The structures which are normally discarded in a 3D printing process become an integral part of the piece.
